The company has achieved a failure rate of 0.35 FIT (Failures In Time) within its Tru-SiPh™ platform, shifting the primary reliability bottleneck from the laser to the physical packaging.
Performance Metrics and Industry Benchmarks
The white paper provides a comparative analysis of failure rates in high-speed optical systems. Traditional optical transceiver modules typically exhibit FIT rates ranging from 120 to over 300. A significant portion of these failures is attributed to the complexity of the optical assembly.
Integrated Architecture: Skorpios utilizes a configuration of two integrated lasers and one Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) per channel to achieve the 0.35 FIT benchmark.
• Packaging Threshold: At this level of semiconductor reliability, the system’s Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) becomes limited by the packaging and assembly rather than the light-emitting components.
• Assembly Reliability Benchmarks: In conventional External Laser – Small Form Factor Pluggable (EL-SFP) and Chip-on-Board (COB) designs, packaging-related failures, such as laser coupling misalignment, epoxy degradation, and hermeticity loss, often account for 40% or more of the total module failure profile.
Bypassing Traditional Packaging Limitations
Skorpios’ wafer-scale integration eliminates the mechanical vulnerabilities found in current Optical Engines and transceiver architectures. By integrating the laser directly into the silicon at the foundry level, Skorpios removes the need for in-housing integration of discrete lasers and their alignment, as well as the need for extra external fiber channels in the use case of EL-SFPs. This eliminates the complex assembly and packaging requirements that limit the reliability of competitive solutions.
Redundancy and Reliability of Same-Wafer Lasers
“Even when fabricated on the same epitaxial wafer, backup lasers provide meaningful reliability improvement,” the paper concludes. Adding a backup laser from the same wafer still extends subsystem life because most failures are localized to individual devices rather than the entire wafer. Since every laser must pass its own burn-in test, redundant pairs provide a reliable safety net against independent device failures.
